Student Life
The mission of Pre-College
Student Life is to provide students with a safe, comfortable, and challenging
environment that supplements their academic and artistic endeavors in
a program designed to meet the specific needs of high-school age students.
The Student Life Counselor
Staff
Counselors are the
students' primary contact with the university. Each counselor is responsible
for 20-35 students. As a team, the counselor staff is responsible for
providing structure to the daily activities of students through organizing
large and small scale activities, monitoring and regulating university
services, and providing general assistance when needed. Individually,
counselors assist pre-college students with their personal growth and
development, provide guidance and support, and monitor their safety and
well-being.
The counselor staff
is comprised of four head counselors and fourteen counselors. Counselors
are often looked to for advice based on their own college experience.
All of the counselors are Carnegie Mellon undergraduate students, and
in some cases, were Pre-College students themselves in past summers. The
counselors are supervised by a professional staff member from the Carnegie
Mellon Student Life Office.
Outside of the Classroom
We want you to have
a fun and enriching six weeks and your time outside of your academic program
is just as important to us. To help you make the most of your experience,
the counselor staff plans a full schedule of activities throughout the
summer. There are numerous evening and weekend activities that range from
movie nights to a variety of dances including the Clipper Ship Dance,
field trips to Fallingwater house museum, the Pittsburgh Zoo, Kennywood
amusement park and Pirates baseball games. Other activities have included pizza
and sundae study breaks and educational seminars.
"The
best thing about Pre-College was the diversity of courses and people.
I never realized how dynamic and challenging the college experience
could be! Pre-College really opened my eyes to the many experiences
I'll have in college."
