Design
Design
has an overwhelming influence on contemporary life. Nearly everything
that's been manufactured or printedpackages, appliances, furniture,
cars, magazines, posters or CD covershas been influenced by a designer
sensitive to social, aesthetic, technical and economic principles.
Whether
or not you've formally studied design, we're sure that you'll enjoy the
Pre-College Design Program at Carnegie Mellon. As a Pre-College design
student, you'll work on both group and individual projects involving drawing,
photography, computer graphics, communication design and industrial design.
You'll be involved in individual and group critiques concerning your work,
and will "learn as you go" through interaction with other design students
and faculty.
Most
important, the Carnegie Mellon Pre-College Design Program will help you
discover if you have the necessary skills and level of desire to study
design at the college level. You may request a portfolio review for admission
to the School of Design during the last week of the program.
Materials
During the registration period, you will receive
a list of suggested art materials, which may be purchased at the university
art store.
If you already have some of the materials at homesuch as a 35mm
camerafeel free to bring them with you. For other materials, wait
until after the first day of class to purchase them. Many students find
that they can share supplies with their classmates.
The Program
The six-week program consists of three-hour classes each
morning and afternoon.
The Pre-College summer design faculty comprises the same faculty
from Carnegie Mellon's undergraduate design
program. This select group of faculty members provides Pre-College
students with an integrated study program of communication design, industrial
design, drawing, photography and computer graphics along with professional
career counseling and guidance appropriate for high school students. Each
student will meet with a faculty member to discuss his or her performance
in the program and will receive a written evaluation of his or her work
after the program is completed.
The Pre-College Program runs from June 27 - August 6, 2004.
Design courses, schedule and fees
are detailed in the courses
section.
"I loved
living on campus and getting to know people from different backgrounds.
I especially liked the artistic atmosphere of the program and getting
to see plays, concerts and art shows."
