Drama
The
School of Drama offers separate programs for students wishing to experience
intense, conservatory training in:
Acting
Musical Theatre
Design and Technical Production
Electives
The
Faculty
Pre-College Drama employs a core faculty comprising professors, instructors
and staff from its world-class conservatory program. Joining the core
faculty will be working professionals engaged especially for the Pre-College
program.
The Program's Closing Events
The Drama Pre-College curriculum focuses on process rather than results.
Nevertheless, the culmination of the program is an audition or portfolio
review. These events are mandatory for all students whether or not they
plan to apply to Carnegie Mellon for admission.
The
audition/portfolio reviews take place during the last two days of the
session. Acting and Musical Theatre students will perform two contrasting,
two-minute monologues. In addition, Musical Theatre students will participate
in dance and singing voice audition. Design and Technical Production students
will experience a 20-minute portfolio review and mock interview with faculty.
At
the end of the summer program, students may express their interest in
admission to Carnegie Mellon School of Drama. Every student will receive
an evaluation for his or her coursework along with advice for future development
in the profession.
Things to Know . . .
Acting students should bring leotards, tights or "sweats" anything
that allows unrestricted movement. Musical Theater students should bring:
(a) leotards, (b) tights, (c) dance belt or athletic supporter (men),
(d) ballet and jazz shoes. Design and Production students should bring
old clothes or clothing that you don't mind getting dirty.
Most
classes are held from 9 a.m. - 6 p.m., Monday through Friday, with
a daily lunch break. Note: Crew, optional courses and some required courses
take place in the evening.
Of Special Note...

It is an intensive program modeled after our undergraduate BFA curriculum.
Students should arrive on campus eager to participate in a great college-level
experience.
Students are highly encouraged to live on campus. The School of Drama
will not make special class arrangements for commuters.
Students
are not permitted to drop required courses.
The
Pre-College Program runs from June 27 - August 6, 2004.
Drama courses, schedule and fees are detailed in the courses
section.
"I had planned to apply to Carnegie Mellon anyway, but now it is one
of my top choices because I love the campus and the surrounding area.
I met all of the teachers in the School of Drama and learned a great
deal about the undergraduate program. Now I want to attend more than
ever!"
